Fred Truyen holds a PhD in Philosophy (1991) and is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Arts, KU Leuven, Belgium. Head of the Faculty’s Computer Department since 1989, currently chairman of the ICT Council of the Group Humanities and Social Sciences at KU Leuven. Fred Truyen is a member of the Institute for Cultural Studies, where he leads the CS/Digital Media lab.
He teaches Informatiekunde (Information Science) and Online Publishing to students in cultural-historical fields such as Archaeology, Art History, History, Oriental Studies, Musicology, Cultural Studies. His research focusses on two main strands: Online and Open Learning, ICT skills and Epistemology on the one hand and Digitization of Cultural Heritage on the other. His main personal interest is in futurology, our perception of and aspirations for the future and the way this shapes current technologies.
